Thomas “Tommy” Paul was born on May 17, 1997, and is one of the many American tennis players to have had success in recent results.
Tommy was born in New Jersey, where his mum and stepdad now own a farm, however, he grew up playing tennis on clay courts in North Carolina. He was first introduced to the sport by his mum, a former tennis player at East Carolina University.
Growing up Tommy had a lot of success in juniors and reached a career-high ITF junior ranking of No.3 in 2015. In that same year, Tommy Paul won the 2015 French Open boys’ singles title and reached the final of the 2015 US Open boys’ singles both times playing fellow countryman Taylor Fritz in the final.
Paul also made his professional debut in 2015 when he qualified for the 2015 US Open however he ended up losing to Andreas Seppi in the first round.
Tommy Paul’s breakthrough season on the ATP Tour came in 2021 when he finished the year ranked inside the top 50 and won his first ATP title at the Stockholm Open where he beat world No.5 Andrey Rublev and defending champion Denis Shapovalov en route.
Tommy continued his run of form into 2022 reaching the Wimbledon fourth round for the very first time and clinching two top 3 wins over Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open and Rafael Nadal at the Paris Masters.
So far in 2023, Tommy reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. This is his best result to date in a Grand Slam and it also made him the first American male to get to the semis of the Australian Open since Andy Roddick in 2009.
With a current ranking of world No.19, we are hoping there is more to come from Tommy Paul especially with the clay court season coming up which is his favorite surface.
In his career so far, Tommy Paul has accumulated $3,525,223 in prize money which does not include money he’ll receive from his sponsors such as Yonex and New Balance. Many tennis players will also earn money from endorsement deals, special appearances and many more however it is impossible to determine how much Tommy has made from these bonuses.
I think it is fair to say that Tommy Paul’s net worth is around $4 million however this is likely to increase over time as he continues to achieve good results in tournaments.
In 2023, Tommy Paul signed a new sponsorship deal with Yonex which he now uses for his racket, grips, racket bag and many other accessories.
Listed below is the gear he uses:
- Racket: Yonex VCORE 98
- Strings: Luxilon Alu Power 16L
- Overgrips: Yonex Super Grap Overgrips
- Vibration Dampener: Yonex Vibration Stopper
It is worth noting that many professional tennis players use custom rackets made specifically for them and get that custom racket painted like the model they’re endorsing. It is unknown whether Tommy Paul is actually using the Yonex VCORE 98 however this racket is still one of the best on the market.
Tommy Paul is currently sponsored by New Balance and relies on them for his apparel.
Throughout the year, you’ll notice player outfits change normally around the time of Grand Slam events. Personally, I loved his outfit at the 2023 Australian Open.
Apart from his sponsorship deals with Yonex and New Balance, Tommy Paul is also endorsed by Motorola which is a telecommunications company based in the United States.
This is likely to be a multi-year deal that Tommy is getting paid from.
